Experience Illumination Week from the water as you paddle past the beautifully illuminated windmills of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage. As dusk falls and the lights come on, you’ll enjoy a unique view of the world-famous windmill landscape from your kayak. It’s an unforgettable experience that is only available during Illumination Week.
When can you go kayaking?
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (7, 8 and 12 September)
On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, you hire a kayak for the entire evening. Your start time is 8 p.m. but please arrive 15 minutes earlier. There is no guide, allowing you to explore the waterways at your own pace. You decide how long you’d like to stay on the water, as long as you return your kayak by 10.30 p.m.
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (9, 10 and 11 September)
On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, you can join a guided kayaking tour. Two departure times are available:
- 8 p.m. – 9 p.m.
- 9.30 p.m. – 10.30 p.m.
During the tour, you’ll paddle together with an experienced guide past the illuminated windmills and experience Kinderdijk from the water. Please arrive 15 minutes before departure for a short safety briefing and kayaking instructions.
Good to know
You’ll be paddling in a tandem kayak. If your booking includes an odd number of participants, you may be paired with another guest.

- Monday, Tuesday & Saturday: Self-guided kayaking (start at 8 p.m., return by 10.30 p.m.)
- Wednesday, Thursday & Friday: Guided 1-hour kayaking tours (8 p.m. – 9 p.m. or 9.30 p.m. – 10.30 p.m.)
- Departure point: Jetty next to the Visitor Center
- Arrival: Please arrive 15 minutes before departure
- Kayaks: Tandem kayaks (if you book for an odd number of participants, you may share a kayak with another guest)
