Paddle past the beautifully illuminated windmills of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage. A unique experience available for just one week each year.

Experience Illumination Week from the water as you paddle past the beautifully illuminated windmills of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage. As dusk falls and the lights come on, you’ll enjoy a unique view of the world-famous windmill landscape from your kayak. It’s an unforgettable experience that is only available during Illumination Week.

 

 

When can you go kayaking?

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (7, 8 and 12 September)

On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, you hire a kayak for the entire evening. Your start time is 8 p.m. but please arrive 15 minutes earlier. There is no guide, allowing you to explore the waterways at your own pace. You decide how long you’d like to stay on the water, as long as you return your kayak by 10.30 p.m.

 

 

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (9, 10 and 11 September)

On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, you can join a guided kayaking tour. Two departure times are available:

 

  • 8 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • 9.30 p.m. – 10.30 p.m.

During the tour, you’ll paddle together with an experienced guide past the illuminated windmills and experience Kinderdijk from the water. Please arrive 15 minutes before departure for a short safety briefing and kayaking instructions.

 

 

Good to know

You’ll be paddling in a tandem kayak. If your booking includes an odd number of participants, you may be paired with another guest.

 

 

Practical information

  • Monday, Tuesday & Saturday: Self-guided kayaking (start at 8 p.m., return by 10.30 p.m.)
  • Wednesday, Thursday & Friday: Guided 1-hour kayaking tours (8 p.m. – 9 p.m. or 9.30 p.m. – 10.30 p.m.)
  • Departure point: Jetty next to the Visitor Center
  • Arrival: Please arrive 15 minutes before departure
  • Kayaks: Tandem kayaks (if you book for an odd number of participants, you may share a kayak with another guest)
  • Price: €24.50 per person

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need kayaking experience?

No, previous kayaking experience is not required. For the guided tours, your instructor will provide a short introduction before departure. On the self-guided evenings, you’ll explore independently. A reasonable level of fitness and the ability to swim are recommended.

Will I paddle alone or with someone else?

You’ll paddle in a tandem kayak. If you book for an odd number of participants, you may be paired with another guest.

What happens in bad weather?

The kayaking activities generally continue in less favourable weather conditions. Only in the case of extreme weather, such as thunderstorms, may the activity be cancelled for safety reasons.

What should I bring?

Wear comfortable clothing that can get wet or dirty. Depending on the weather, we recommend bringing an extra layer or a waterproof jacket. Small waterproof barrels are available to safely store your personal belongings.

Are life jackets provided?

Yes. A life jacket is provided for every participant and must be worn throughout the kayaking activity.

Is kayaking suitable for children?

Yes. Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

By purchasing a ticket, you agree to the Terms & Conditions of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage. Tickets cannot be cancelled, refunded, or changed after purchase.
