Tips about the local area

More sights to see while you are here

When you visit Kinderdijk, why not make a day of it and explore the local area? Here are some tips!

Out and about in Zuid-Holland

The province of Zuid-Holland is full of water, green meadows and tiny, ancient towns. Once you leave Kinderdijk, you find yourself in the Alblasserwaard, a rural area of small lakes, polder landscapes and historic villages. Bustling towns and cities are only a stone’s throw away, but you don’t need to travel far to find the peace and quiet of the wide-open countryside.

Bike, walk or sail through charming scenery

Kinderdijk’s surrounding area will appeal to your sense of curiosity, so get on your bike and cycle over meandering dikes, through pretty polders and small farming villages. But if exploration on foot is more your line, you’ll find walking routes that cross the Alblasserwaard region and follow its waterways. Or you can take to the water and sail over the Lek River to see Kinderdijk and the surrounding countryside from another angle. The quiet, open nature of this region makes it ideal for getting out and about under your own steam.

Combine your visit with a trip to another town

If you’re looking for more culture, why not combine your Kinderdijk trip with a visit to one of the nearby towns? Wander around the charming streets of Dordrecht, the oldest town in Holland. Amble along the town’s canals and admire the heritage buildings. Or visit Nieuwpoort, a tiny fortified “city” full of history and character, surrounded by city walls and water. And the cozy, nearby town of Schoonhoven, the “Silver Town”, is perfect for an afternoon of strolling and delightful surprises.
