What is there to do at Kinderdijk?

A visit to Kinderdijk means much more than just looking at windmills. At Kinderdijk, you step into a unique water management system seen by the whole world as an example. Taken together, the visitor locations tell a story unlike any other story in any other place.

 

Visit the museum mills for an immediate step back in time. Every windmill draws you in and shows you life as it once was.

 

Come aboard our tour boat and explore Kinderdijk from a completely different angle.

 

Investigate the historic Wisboom Pumping Station to see how technology reinforced and supplemented the work done by the windmills.

Do I need a ticket to visit Kinderdijk?

Yes, you need a ticket for admission to the visitor locations at Kinderdijk. It’s easy to order your ticket online or buy it at the cash desk.

 

All revenue goes to the upkeep and maintenance of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage, so we can preserve this unique spot for future generations.

What are the opening hours at Kinderdijk?

Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage Site is open nearly all year round. Go to the opening hours page for current information.

May I take my dog to Kinderdijk?

You are very welcome to bring your dog along to Kinderdijk, as long as it is leashed. You can bring them along to all our locations and on the tour boat. The only place where dogs are not allowed is in Kinderdijk-cafe. Of course, this exception does not apply to guide dogs for the visually impaired with a valid identification card.

Can I visit Kinderdijk after closing time?

The visitor locations at Kinderdijk are not open to the public after closing time. For the current opening hours, please go to the opening hours page.

Are there any food and beverage venues at Kinderdijk?

Kinderdijk has several places where you can eat and drink. Go to our food and drink page for more information.

Are there any overnight accommodation facilities at Kinderdijk?

There are various places where you can stay overnight in and around Kinderdijk. You will find cozy bed & breakfasts, comfortable hotels, friendly holiday parks, and campsites. Do you offer any packages, tours or guides?

Amenities

Are there lockers?

There are lockers in three sizes at the Kinderdijk Visitor Center. You can safely store your baggage there during your visit. Costs vary from € 6 to € 10 a day, depending on the size of the locker.

Are there bikes available for hire at Kinderdijk?

There are no bikes available for hire at the actual Kinderdijk World Heritage Site, but there are several locations in the immediate vicinity where you can rent a bike for your visit to Kinderdijk.

Can wheelchair users and visitors with an impairment access Kinderdijk World Heritage Site?

Wheelchair users and visitors with a physical impairment can access most of Kinderdijk World Heritage Site. The Visitor Center has two wheelchairs available for visitors to borrow on the day of the visit, free of charge. The wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. Please ask for one at the Visitor Center’s reception desk.

 

There are restrooms with disabled access in the Visitor Center and at the group entrance. The windmill yards, walking paths, tour boats, and practically all the visitor locations are easily accessible for wheelchair users. However, the museum mills themselves do not have wheelchair access due to the narrow entrances and steep stairs.

 

Please remember that the Kinderdijk windmill area is quite large and that you need to be able to travel relatively large distances on your visit.

Are there baby-changing stations for babies and small children?

You can change children’s diapers in the restroom of the Visitor Center and in the Secondary Pumping Station De Fabriek. The restrooms are accessible during opening hours.

Where can I park?

Visitors with admission tickets to Kinderdijk can park your car on Marineweg in Alblasserdam.

 

There are CMS in Alblasserdam to lead you to our parking lot. There are daily shuttle buses running from the parking lot (between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.) to and from the entrance zone of the windmill area. It’s very quick and convenient.

What are the parking fees?

Parking at Kinderdijk World Heritage Site costs € 9.75 per car and € 2.50 per motorbike. The price of the transportation by shuttle bus from the parking lot to the entrance zone of the windmill area is included in the fee. Parking is only permitted in combination with an admission ticket to the World Heritage Site.

Where can I park my RV?

There are plenty of options close to Kinderdijk for parking, or overnighting in, an RV. More detailed information about RV sites, amenities, and rules are available on our Route & Address page.

Is disabled parking available?

There is a parking lot close to the Visitor Center at Kinderdijk (address: Nederwaard 1, Kinderdijk). Please note: this parking lot is not specifically for disabled users, but the location is closer to the entrance.

The parking fees are € 9.75 per car. This parking lot cannot be reserved in advance.

Where can coaches park?

Coaches transporting groups to Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage Site can use the Stop & Go zone at Kinderdijk’s group entrance.  After the group has alighted, the coach must park at a designated parking lot in the nearby village of Nieuw-Lekkerland.

 

Reservations are compulsory for every visit made by coach. Requests can only be submitted by email to the Sales Department at sales@kinderdijk.nl. The department can be reached Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.

Is there a charging point for electric cars and bicycles at Kinderdijk?

Kinderdijk World Heritage Site does not currently have a charging point for electric cars or electric bikes. Visitors who arrive by electric car or e-bike are advised to charge their vehicles elsewhere. However, there are several public charging points for electric cars in the vicinity, such as in Alblasserdam and Dordrecht.

Tickets

What’s included in the admission ticket?

Admission to Kinderdijk World Heritage Site includes access to a range of activities and visitor locations in the windmill area. This information page contains a comprehensive list of all the activities you can do and all the sights you can visit with the ticket.

Can I buy an admission ticket at the cash desk?

Tickets for Kinderdijk World Heritage Site can be purchased at the cash desk. Nonetheless, we advise visitors to order online tickets in advance to avoid long queues and to be sure of admission on the day you want to visit.

Must I print my e-ticket?

You do not need to print an e-ticket. It is easy to show your digital ticket on your smartphone at the visitor locations, where it will be scanned for admission.

I have not received the confirmation email with my tickets; what should I do?

If you have not received your tickets for Kinderdijk World Heritage Site, please check your spam box or unwanted emails box. Sometimes emails end up there by accident. If you still can’t find the email, please reach out to the Kinderdijk reception desk at info@kinderdijk.nl or by telephone on line 078 691 28 30. We shall check whether we received your order and would be happy to be of assistance.

Once I have bought my ticket, can I cancel, return, or exchange it?

The purchase of a ticket means that you accept the Kinderdijk World Heritage Site General Terms and Conditions. An order cannot be cancelled, returned, or exchanged.

Can you send me an invoice for my order?

We do not send invoices for the purchase of a ticket. If you need an invoice, please send a request for an invoice by reaching out to info@kinderdijk.nl. We would be happy to be assistance.

Can I pay by cash?

No, PIN payments are the only payment options at all visitor locations at Kinderdijk World Heritage Site. Cash payments will be rejected. Kinderdijk World Heritage Site is cashless, for your safety and ours.

I have purchased a ticket through an online booking site and have a question about it.

If you have any questions, or if you want to change, or cancel, tickets sold by resale points, please reach out directly to the company from which you purchased the ticket.

Can I get a discount on my ticket to Kinderdijk if I have an impairment or I am disabled?

Visitors with an impairment can buy discounted admission tickets for Kinderdijk World Heritage Site. In addition, one travel companion will get free admission, on condition the visitor demonstrably cannot visit Kinderdijk independently.

 

The discount can only be applied to tickets purchased at the cash desk of the Visitor Center at Kinderdijk. We cannot give discounts on tickets that are already purchased.

Can I get a discount with my Netherlands Museum Pass/ Euro<26 youth card / student card / Rotterdampas / Vriendenloterij VIP card?

The Netherlands Museum Pass and the Euro<26 youth card do not give any discount on admission to Kinderdijk World Heritage Site. On presentation of a valid student card, Rotterdampas or Vriendenloterij VIP card, you will get a discount on your admission, but only if the ticket is purchased at the cash desk of the Visitor Center. We cannot give discounts on tickets that are already purchased.

How can I use my free card?

Present the free card at the cash desk of the Visitor Center of Kinderdijk World Heritage Site. At the cash desk, your free card will be exchanged for a valid admission ticket for the World Heritage Site.

Can I redeem my Tourist Information Office (VVV) Gift Certificate?

You can use your Tourist Information Office Gift Certificate in the Gift Shop and in Kinderdijk-café in Kinderdijk World Heritage Site’s Visitor Center. You can pay with the Gift Certificate at those locations. The Tourist Information Office (VVV) Gift Certificate cannot be used for entry tickets.

When is Illumination Week?

Illumination Week is always held in the first full week of September (Monday through Saturday); this event puts the windmills of Kinderdijk World Heritage Site in the spotlight. Every evening, we host a range of activities.

Can I take part in the Windmill Market at Kinderdijk?

Stichting Molenmarkt Kinderdijk oversees the organization of the Windmill Market. You can reach out to them, to reserve a stand, for instance, at info@kinderdijksemolenmarkt.nl

Can I hire skates at Kinderdijk during the Molentocht?

Whenever it freezes at Kinderdijk, we are always asked: when is the Windmill Tour and where can I hire skates? Stichting Werelderfgoed Kinderdijk does not       organize the Windmill Tour and does not hire out skates. We do not have any information about the reliability or safety of the ice in the windmill area either.

Miscellaneous

May I fly a drone at Kinderdijk?

No, in principle, you are not permitted to fly drones over Kinderdijk World Heritage Site. The area is part of the protected Natura 2000 network and, moreover, most of the windmills are actual homes. Drones cause inconvenience and pose a risk of privacy breaches for the residents and the peace and quiet of the area.

 

Drone use is not permitted at Kinderdijk without a permit. Only professional drone pilots can apply for permission, on stringent conditions, from Haaglanden Environmental Service. If you have been issued a permit, please report to us so we can inform the residents of the windmills.

 

Anyone who flies a drone without permission and causes inconvenience is subject to a € 410 fine under the General Municipal Ordinance. Visit www.rijksoverheid.nl for more information about the national rules on drones.

No, you are not permitted to moor a boat or any other vessel at the jetties within the Kinderdijk World Heritage Site.

No, you can’t purchase a gift certificate for Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage.
