From A to B by boat
For centuries, boats were the only means of transport in this area, for reasons you can still experience: sodden dikes and narrow paths. When you sail along the banks of the waterways today, you are looking at the same landscape the millers and their families saw in bygone days, and for a moment, time seems to have stood still. Nonetheless, there have been a great many changes to the landscape and the local countryside. You can, in fact, see both its history and its transformation.
A quintessentially Dutch picture
On the boat, you sail into a picture postcard: rows of windmills lining the waterways, Dutch skies, rustling reeds and polders as far as the eye can see. There’s nothing that moves on the map, but here everything ripples and rustles along with you. Suddenly, you realize: this is the story behind the Netherlands’ greatness.
