A Hopper tour boat cruises past a windmill in Kinderdijk with visitors on board.
Kinderdijk by boat

Seeing the sights from the tour boat

From the water, you can see Kinderdijk as this place was once intended: a living landscape that adapts to its natural surroundings. Enjoy the peace and the slower pace.

From A to B by boat

For centuries, boats were the only means of transport in this area, for reasons you can still experience: sodden dikes and narrow paths. When you sail along the banks of the waterways today, you are looking at the same landscape the millers and their families saw in bygone days, and for a moment, time seems to have stood still. Nonetheless, there have been a great many changes to the landscape and the local countryside. You can, in fact, see both its history and its transformation.

The boat tour is peaceful, atmospheric, and suitable for all ages. You can board and disembark at several places. If you want to explore the area more extensively from the water between April and October, you can take a trip on the Cruiser toar boat, which sails a longer route past several locations, but you can’t get off before the end. These options mean you can decide how long your boat trip is and how much walking you want to do.

A quintessentially Dutch picture

On the boat, you sail into a picture postcard: rows of windmills lining the waterways, Dutch skies, rustling reeds and polders as far as the eye can see. There’s nothing that moves on the map, but here everything ripples and rustles along with you. Suddenly, you realize: this is the story behind the Netherlands’ greatness.

The views from the boat offer plenty of opportunities for the perfect photograph of the windmills against a lush green backdrop.

Thanks to you, we can preserve this piece of history

The boat tour is more than a pleasant trip. As a visitor, you are helping to preserve Kinderdijk. Our boats are crewed by dedicated volunteers who know the local area. The revenues go towards the upkeep of the windmills and the future of this heritage. So, remember, you are not just sailing through the past, you are helping us move forward to the next chapter.
