Protecting Heritage for the Future: Behind the Scenes at Kinderdijk

For many visitors, Kinderdijk is a place of iconic windmills, water, and classic Dutch scenery. But behind these world famous views lies a much bigger story.

The heritage of Kinderdijk is not only found in its nineteen windmills and pumping stations, but also in the objects, documents, stories, and traditions connected to them. Together, they tell the story of who we are and where Kinderdijk comes from.

More than just windmills

When people think of Kinderdijk, they often think of the windmills themselves. But the heritage of Kinderdijk goes far beyond that. Our collection includes original construction drawings, personal belongings that are more than a hundred years old, and equally important: intangible heritage. The stories, knowledge, and traditions passed down from generation to generation. These objects and traditions are what make history feel real and tangible.

Vulnerable Heritage

Many of these objects are fragile. Paper can discolor due to light and moisture. Organic materials may develop mold or begin to decay. Old tools sometimes contain rust or even hazardous remnants of oil and paint from earlier times. That is why it is so important to properly document and understand the collection. In the event of an emergency, what do you save first and what do you leave behind?

Behind the scenes at Kinderdijk

A great deal of work happens behind the scenes to preserve the collection. In storage facilities, objects are carefully registered, inspected, and stored safely. Attention is paid not only to the objects themselves, but also to the conditions in which they are kept. Factors such as light, humidity, temperature, and security all play an important role.

Staff members and volunteers are equally important. They are often the first to notice damage or identify situations where visitors may unintentionally put heritage at risk.

That is why awareness is essential

Heritage must stay alive

At the same time, heritage is not only about preserving objects behind glass. Some items need to remain visible or even be used in order to keep their stories alive. Historic tools, household items, and personal belongings of former mill residents help bring the history of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage to life.

Protecting the future together

When you visit Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage, remember that nothing you see is taken for granted. You are quite literally walking through centuries of history. Behind every windmill, every object, and every story lies a piece of cultural heritage that is carefully preserved for future generations. That is exactly why it is so important that we all help take care of it together.
