Experience the enchanting Illumination Week

As the sun sets over the polder, Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage transforms into a truly magical place. Every year, during the first full week of September, the historic windmills are beautifully illuminated. The result is an enchanting spectacle, with these centuries-old icons reflecting in the dark waters of the waterways.

Illumination Week has been a much-loved tradition for over fifty years. From 8.15 p.m. onwards, the lights come on and a warm, magical atmosphere settles over the area. It is the perfect time to experience Kinderdijk from a completely different and romantic perspective.

Evening cruises, tastings and more

There is plenty to experience on and around the water during Illumination Week. A peaceful evening cruise offers breathtaking views of the illuminated windmills reflected in the dark water. Looking to make your evening even more special? Step aboard the Borrel Boat for a relaxing cruise with delicious bites and drinks. Fans of local craft beer can join the special Kater evening, where local brewery Kinderdijkse Kater serves a selection of its unique speciality beers.

If you prefer to discover Kinderdijk from a different perspective, the Nederwaard Museum Mill opens its doors especially in the evenings from Wednesday to Saturday. Step inside and experience centuries of history in the atmospheric evening light. Tickets for the museum mill during the evening opening hours are only available at the ticket desk. Looking for something a little more active? Glide silently past the illuminated windmills during a unique kayak tour. End your evening at the Kinderdijk-cafe, where you can enjoy a bite and a drink while taking in the enchanting polder scenery.

Practical tips for your evening visit

Parking: From 5.30 p.m. onwards, you can park free of charge at the IHC site (approximately a 10-minute walk from the entrance). Parking directly at the entrance costs €9.75 and spaces are limited.

Lighting in the polder: The windmills are beautifully illuminated, but the walking paths themselves remain dark to protect the natural environment. We therefore recommend bringing a torch if you plan to walk through the area.

Transport: The shuttle bus and WaterShuttle do not operate during the evening hours of Illumination Week. Please arrange your own transport to and from Kinderdijk.

Book your tickets in advance

Illumination Week takes place for just one week each year and is extremely popular. Evening activities and cruises have limited availability, so if you want to make sure you have a place on a cruise or can visit the museum mill, we recommend booking your tickets online in advance.
